Do you Beat Bounce?

In June we participated in the local rotary club's annual street festival. Unfortunately, it was a miserably cold and wet day, but that didn't stop us!

At our booth, we had free 10 minute lessons, stickers, giveaways, and a new game that I created just for the event - Beat Bounce.

A few weeks prior to the festival, I was going through my games trying to find one that anyone could play no matter what their musical knowledge. Much to my chagrin, I found that everything was either far too advanced for a music novice or needed, what I felt was, an excessive explanation.

So, I looked at all the materials I had and found some egg crates and ping pong balls. I grabbed a sharpie to write in a few notes and rests and voila, a game.

My original design didn't have anything to stop the ping pong balls. I originally thought I'd stand behind the table to catch any balls that strayed, but that seemed a little awkward. So I picked up some foam board and created a backboard. I cut a third egg crate in half to support the stands of the boards.

This not only helped control the ping pong balls, but gave kids a little something more to aim at AND was one extra layer of reinforcement. Woohoo multitasker!

The basic rules of Beat Bounce are simple. Bounce a ball into the red tray with notes, then you have 3 tries to bounce a ball into the matching rest.

Everyone who tried the game loved it! It's also been a huge hit with my students and their siblings.
